CALCUTTA MERCHANTS.
TRADE WITH MANCHESTER. CHECK DUE TO RIOT LOSSES. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 11.55 p.m.) DELHI. Aug. 2. The merchants of Calcutta have sustained heavy losses of piece goods as a result of the communal riots in that city. In consequence of these losses the Marwari Chamber of Commerce, a most influential body of Indian traders, has requested its members not to place forward contracts for foreign piece goods for defined periods. The effect of this will be that no piece goods trade will be transacted with Manchester for four months. The normal imports, which amount to £26,000,000 a year, will be reduced one-third.
