NATIONAL BRAND.
Sir,—Replying to your correspondent, " Progressive,' 1 he side-steps Retrograde's " point that while the Dairy Control Board denies that it contemplates fixing prices in London it proceeds to fix the prices payable to factories according to Government grader's certificate. Briefly put, it would appear that in addition to confiscating the owner's rights in his own property, the board is not even prepared to pay him the price paid by the buyer of his butter, as the" buyer will select "the .butter, not according to the grade points, but according to its suitability for his trade, Apparently the board is not governed by the law applying to trustees, but can do as it pleases with (jther people's money. "Progressive's" arguments, arc purely theoretical,, or tie would, realise that grading is only a matter of opinion, not an exact science. Account sales can be produced' showing that on occasions second grade butter has realised within Is to 2s per cwt. of superfine. A factory's goodwill in the shape of, its brand is a tangible asset .whether the output bo large or small. Touching the matter of outputs—the size, of the output has nothing to do with the goodwill. Butters from different provinces possess different characteristic*. The Meat Board in quoting lambs stresses whether they come from Canterbury or Auckland. Lambs from Canterbury have a goodwill. Would that goodwill be improved by mixing them with lambs from other provinces and classing them all as " Fornleaf " lambs'? ' Independence.
