REMUERA'S NEW LIBRARY.
OPENING CEREMONY TO-DAY. A HANDSOME STRUCTURE. The attractive brick building recently erected to house the Remuera branch of the City Library will be officially opened at 3 p.m. to-day by Miss E. Melville, chairwoman, of the Library Committee of the City Council. The Mayor r Mr. G. Baildon, will preside and it is expected that there will be a large attendance of residents. For many years the library activities in Remuera have been carried on in the building on Remura Road which was the office of the Remuera Road Board prior to the district amalgamating with the city. The building has "long since become inadequate and the council decided to provide a library capable of meeting the needs of the district. Following on the carrying of a loan for £12.000 for the purpose, Messrs. Gummor and Ford were asked to design a building and the handsome brick structure in the Georgian colonial style is the result. The contract was entrusted to Messrs. W. Philcox and Sons, and they have produced, a building which is an ornament to the district. The old library was. closed down on Thursday evening and the books and contents have now been transferred to the new library, which will be open for the issue of books from seven o'clock this evening. The old building, which is still in an excellent state of preservation, will later be transferred the Point Chevalier district, where it will be used as an additional branch library.
