AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
CROSS-COUNTRY EVENT. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. Considerable interest is being taken in the New Zealand amateur cross-country championship, to be decided at Alexandra Park, Epsom, on September 4. The race will be over a-quarter miles of true cross-country, and teams from Otago, Canterbury, Wellington, West Coast and Auckland are expected to take part. Gisborne may also be represented. Last year the event was decided in DunedPin, when E. L. Brown was first man home. Brown, who, at that time, belonged t6 Dunedin, is now a resident of Auckland, having arrived last week, but he intends to qompete on August 4 as an Otago representative, A good supporting programme has been drawn up. This includes a two miles steeplechase, 100 yds. handicap, 120 yds. hurdles' handicap, 75yds. ladies' handicap, high jump handicap, and one, two and five miles' cycling handicaps. Entries will close on August 21. EVENTS AT THE DOMAIN. The seventh of the series of winter competitions promoted by the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club' will be decided at the Outer Domain this afternoon, commencing at 2 o'clock. A handicap steeplechase of three circuits of the Domain, about two and a-quarter miles, will be decided. Other events are a 75yds. handicap' and javelin, discus and shot-putting events. Another series of competitions will be arranged for next Saturday, and on August 14 and 28 cross-country championships will be contested.
