RIFLE IN A SANCTUARY.

AN EXPENSIVE TRIAL SHOT. The discharge of a rifle in the Waiatarua bird sanctuary was admitted by Phillip B. White (Mr. Beckerleg) in the Police Court yesterday. Mr. Beckerleg said defendant bought a rifle for deer shooting. He did not know of the existence of the sanctuary and went to it as a quiet spot in which to try the rifle. He fired at a tree stump 300 yards away. A fine of 10s with costs was imposed.
