In-a recent interview..with a well-known 'medical .man who is a keen ah|' competent observer it was stated that -.there, is no inspector.- of, hospitals at present in New Zealand to help to superyise hpspitals, inquire jnto surgical'.methods, and co-ordin-ate, the .work- of hospitals on approved standards. This defect ;seems -to be recognised- .by Dr. T. . Ef, ? A. Yalintine, Director-General of Health, .who; in his annual report states:--.. - : "•With; the return' of . Dr. t Wfitt ,and to some: extent to departmental reorganisation it may be. possible. for me td visit a larger number of hospitals and :ttieir• controlling -boards' than 1 hais been tbo case for the last few years. .Nevertheless I;.hope,-the time.<is.np,t far distant Av%en it . will be possible to appoint a director of, the hospitals division so that .such an officer will-fee able-to assist the 'department in the inspection of hospitals, the'necessity 'fori which is every-.year be coming more pressing."
