FATAL CONCOCTIONS.
MANY DEATHS CAUSED, j UNITED STATES AND CANADA. A. and N.Z.-Keuter. NEW YORK. July 26 A message from Buffalo, New York State, says 29 people died there at the week-end from the effects of poisonous liquor. In three cases thg victims were %vomen.
Four other persons were blinded through drinking similar concoctions.
The border police in Canada and the United States made eight arrests. The latter have laid charges of manslaughter in the first degree against a man and a woman.
Three private dwellirgs and two saloons were raided on American ' territory. Large quantities of wood alcohol and "moonshine" stills were seized.
The police were guided by a man from whom two of the victims had purchased liquor. One seizure included telegrams, freight slips, bills of lading and the addresses of hundreds of persons resident in Buffalo and other eastern sections.
The police also found price-lists, cancelled cheques and bank-books, some of which disclosed a profit of £4OO every six days.
A report from Toronto states that 13 deaths in three days were caused by drinking poisonous liquor in Western Ontario. The Canadian authorities say they believe the source of supply is located in the United States.
