A CRICKET COACH.
Local cricketers and all who follow the game will learn with gratification that the Auckland Cricket Council's negotiations for a playercoach from England have resulted in the appointment of E. H. Bowley. Leading batsman and change bowler for Sussex, he has an established reputation in county cricket. His batting is characterised by excellent style, and is the outcome of sound teaching and constant facing the best bowling English. cricket has produced. He has made his 1000 runs a season in county cricket matches, a record that proves first-class ability. Experience has pruned a recklessness that early critics noted, leaving enough dash to make his present sound methods attractive. With the ball he has captured his 50 wickets a season, his bowling having a deceptive flight that has brought about the downfall of many a batsman of prowess. Lord Hawke's recommendation of him is enthusiastic, and has the support of Mr. A. E. R, Gilligan, whose captaincy on many fields entitles his judgment to great respect, and of Mr. H. D. Swan, the New Zealand Cricket Council's representative in England. That he comes from the'county that sent A. E. Relf, whose aid in a similar capacity did so much for Auckland's cricket years ago, the county also of Tate whom we lately had hopes of getting for this position, makes Bowley's appointment doubly interesting. It should lift the standard of local cricket to a better level than it has recently known.
