July 23 The most devastating wind storm ever known in the eastern portion of the State of New York was responsible for the loss of several lives and caused enormous damage to property. Houses and barns were wrecked, trees were blown down and the damage to crops alone is estimated at £SO,(XX). A girl was killed by a falling tree and a labourer was crushed to death when a shed collapsed. Another man was killed by coming into contact with a live wire which had fallen. Many persons were injured by failing trees when they sat trapped in motor-cars. The highway between Albany and Schenectady was completely blocked by trees measuring 2ft. to 3ft. in diameter. The tramway service was completely dislocated and the telegraph communications were cat. Crops in many instances were levelled to the ground. Numerous windows were blown outward and broken. One small cottage was lifted entirely from its foundation and deposited a few feet away a complete wreck. Many other houses were partially wrecked. The tornado lasted less than 20 minutes.

Although cooler weather was experienced to-day in tho eastern States and in Canada the increaso in the relative humidity largely offset the drop in the temperature. The list of deaths traceable to the heat in the past week has steadily increased. It is believed the total amounts to several hundreds.
