GRAND RATIONAL MEETING. CANTERBURY NOTES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Riccarton winter carnival will be inaugurated on Saturday with the Christchurch Hunt meeting which acts as an excellent curtain-raiser to the Grand National fixture, opening ten days later. In the meatime the track work at Ricarton provides very little of interest. The local horses are goinc on steadily, without doing anything specially exciting, but so far there are very few visitors. The longer interval than usual induced most of the North Island trainers to go home after Trentham and they will return later. Those whose horses are to race at the Hunt meeting will probably begin to arrive early in the week, when Otago and Southland horses will also be putting in an appearance, then the training work will become interesting. Riccarton stables are well represented in the Winter Cup with eleven horses, among them being Deucalion, Bed Wink, Sun Up and Rapier, who heads the list. There is, however, a different story to tell in the jumping events. Charlatan is rated the best of the local Grand National Steeplechase candidates, and he has only 9.13, the other three, Tigerland, Whipcord and Red Cent, being on the minimum. _ In the Grand National Hurdles the position is even worse, the only local representatives being Sayonara, Bonomel and Projector, all at the minimum weight. Fortunately, howthe best jumpers from all part 3 of the Dominion are attracted to Riccarton for the Grand National meeting, so there is no doubt about the success of the meeting. Tuki, Passin' Through, Birkenalla and Comical, who have jumping engagements ahead, also Paddon, who is to rac9 on the flat, have all had an easy time since they arrived at Riccarton, though they are out each day doing light tasks. They are all well and doubtless they will now be sent along a bit faster. A. McAulay has Sun Up looking well, and his brilliant track work suggests that he will be hard to beat in the Winter Cup—a race in which he was second last year. Bed Wink has gone on nicely in his preparation lately, but he is still a long way from being ready, as was demonstrated by his form at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting.. The Harp hag been galloping very freely on the tracks and he may have to be reckoned with very soon. Centrepiece is worth keeping in mind for engagements near at hand. He has ' come through a sound preparation without being asked to break any records and it is worth recalling that his winning form at Easter was decidedly -useful. Bonomel shaped very badly at Trentham, but R. Longley excuses his failure on the ground that the track did not suit him. He has done well since then, but I confess I do not fancy his prospects. Charlatan liaa gone on nicely since he returned from Trentham, but I am afraid the Grand National journey is too far for him. However he may do well in shorter events. , Blue Hall had just recovered from the soreness which troubled him at Trentham, when ho developed a poisoned leg, and this has_ necessitated a further spell. Winkie's Best has shown signs of unsoundness lately and it may trouble R. Emerson to get, hira ready to run. Vagabond went sore recently and A. Wormald will not bother with him until a little later in the year. Hyperion is sound again, but as there was not time to get him ready he has gone home to be spelled for six months, after which he will be got ready for a jumping campaign next winter.

Sunny Lock has made his reappearance on the tracks, but it may be found that he is to be used only to lead J. McCombe's Youngsters. The hurdler Tenterfield has arrived from the West Coast and has gone into J. B. Pearson's stable. The Southland gelding Valdamo, who was sent to J. B. Pearson to be prepared for hurdle racing, is to go home again as he has been lame ever since he arrived at Riccarton. Coupon, Goldtown and Gay Life have resumed work after being off the scene for 60m9 time and they will be got ready for spring racing. Tigerland ran a decent race in the South Canterbury Steeplechase, and so did his mate Whipcord, there being only a neck between tnem at the finish. The racing shbtild benefit both of them, though they scarcely appeal as Grand National prospects. The Southland gelding Osterman was staying on in great style in the South Cantertury Steeplechase and over a longer journey he may beat, the three who finished in front of him to-day. . Frenchman grave an inglorious display in the South Canterbury Steeplechase and it is hard to see how he is going to do much good at Riccarton. Projector appreciated the firm going at Washdyke to-day and he showed good form in winning the hurdle race. He is worth keeping in mind. Listening: Post made his first appearance as a hurdlor to-day at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting. He was prominent early, but lost ground at every hurdle and he dropped out half a mile from hopie. He will need to improve a lot before iie is a good prospect for a big hurdle race. King Abbey won the Waimate Steeplechase in attractive style, but hit his stifle and could not start at the South Canterbury meeting.* He is a useful sort, but does not stay. Uncle Bob, after being second to King Abbey in the Waimate Steeplechase, won the South Canterbury Steeplechase to-day, winning decisively. He is not a good jumper, however, as he runs down his fences, losing ground at ebch of them.

( Mainspring, who won tho Hunt Clip Steeplechase at tho Waimate and South Canterbury _ meetings, is a half-brother to Nightraid, winner of the Ot.ago Steeplechase. He is a rare good sort who will win in oettcr company yet. Kapuna showed promising form when he won the hurdle race at Waimate and lie will earn further honours over hurdles on. ls J l half-brother to Rival, the winner of trie Great Easter Handicap, and Jack bymojis, a good hurdler i Raaiac ran a good race over hurdles at Waimate but apparently it knocked him ,h ™ " p « ,he I The Otago-owned General Advance and mate Cartoon both broke down badly at the Waimate Hunt meeting. This will leave Mr Acton Adams to be represented at Riccarton by Tholomon who is a promising hack ' John Bradbury won a hack race at Waimate in good style, and he was unlucky to only get third at the South Canterbury meeting to-day. He got out very badly Heather Lad is very well and the pair may pay their way in better company verv soon. , J Influenza has been prevalent at Riccarton among the victims being, the well-known trainer, Alhert Cutts, who was in bed for several days. 1
