GOOD PRICE AT AUCTION. An unusually large company gathered at Messrs. Hodgson's, says a London paper, for the sale of books and manuscripts belonging to Mrs. John Lane, widow of the well-known publisher. The most important lot was the original manuscript of Thomas Hardy's " Pair of Blue Eyes." It comprises Chapters 1. to VIII. and XV. to XVIII:, in all 160 folios of quarto paper, and, with the' exception of folios 81 and 82, all in the author's handwriting, There is reason to believe that the remainder of the manuscript is irrecoverably lost. An opening bid of £SOO was quickly run up to £ISOO, at which price Mr. W. T. Spencer was declared the purchaser. „
