PIQUANT UGLINESS.

Isn't it encouraging to read the remark of a French critic, who says, " To-day there are no ugly women " —and then adds, " Or, at least, no woman need be ugly unless she wishes it." I call that remark really cheering, says a well-known writer. And why ? Simply because so many girls moan and groan about some little blemish they may possess —freckles in summer, a rosy nose in winter, and so on, and then think they are too ugly for words. | Now, there are very few of us who haven't some weak spot as regards our appearance. But it's the dwelling on it that makes that blemish much worse than it really is. The freckly girl, for instance, can cover her faca and neck with a coating of white of egg, and then powder herself thickly with fine fuller's earth before she goes out into the hot sun. That's one way to prevent severe freckles from appearing. So she needn't bother about wearing a shady hat or a vfeil or always carrying a parasol. And why worry about freckles ? Lots of girls look simply charming with a few freckles powdered on their pretty little noses. If your special blemish is more pronounced than that—say it's a turn-up nose that you simply hate and can't possibly change—well, dress up to it. There's something rather piquant about a turnup nose, and some of the nicest girls I ve known have had " un nez retrousse," yet they're all married, and adored by their husbands. But, then, they were wise. One girl studied her turn-up profile from all angles, and then thought out a special way t6 do her hair. She went in for dainty and feminine things—rather fluffy —and was never severe in the way of dress. And why ? Because she thought that a turn-up nose would look its worst if she wore very mannish fashions, or did her hair too plainly. You know, many girls really ican make themselves ugly, because they brood so much about their little blemishes in the way of looks. I met a girl who had really a horrid mole right on the side of her nose—and that wasn't beautiful, either. But she didn't brood all day long over it. No, she consulted an expert, and by degrees had it removed by treatment. It may seem a funny thing to say, but use your blemishes as an attraction. Get a style of your own, and draw attention away from them. It's quite intriguing _ when a girl adopts some special fas'hion—say, wearing uncommon ear-rings to rivet attention on her pretty ears, when her nose is ugly.
