"FAUST."
Sir, —Last evening it was my pleasure to hear the Auckland Choral Society's :fihe performance of. " Faust." The outstanding event of the Evening, of course, was the splendidly artistic singing of Messrs. Jordan and Cook, hut even this was marred by, firstly, the noisy playing of ..the " orchestral soloists " (in spite of Mr. Muston's praiseworthy, conducting) and, secondly, the action of some busybody behind the scenes in turning up the lights. The first fault will probably disappear in future productions, but the second defect should be easier to remedy. Surely, the,- society by this timo hae realised the immense importance of having the audience tirsemi-darkness, ail the lighting being concentrated upon the performers. The advantages of this system are obvious—the performers have "more confidence and sing better, while the audience is not condemned to suffer from eyestrain caused by the glare ot the lights. In addition to this the annoying rustle of programmes being turned over is largely obviated. F. Swft July 23;
