SOLDIER'S PENSION.
INCORRECT RETURN MADE.
PERIOD OF UNEMPLOYMENT,
COURT ORDERS REPAYMENT. A breach of the War Pensions Act in failing to make correct returns of his income for the quarter ended last January was admitted by Alfred Easton (Mr. Singer? in the Police Court yesterday. It was stated accused had a war pension of £1 a week, with a special addition of 12s a week. Between last October and January he earned more money than he stated in his returns, with the result that he obtained £lO more from the department than he would otherwise have been given. But for this his record was good. Mr. Singer said accused had served for three years in France and returned to New Zealand as a T.B. patient. He had to support his wife and four children, arid prior to last October had been out of work for eighteen months. When he finally did secure work as a lorry-driver he failed to notify his increase in income. He earned £5 6s with his pension. The magistrate, Mr. Hunt, said accused was given a good medical certificate and could work. He would be convicted and ordered to repay £lO to the department at the rate of 6s a week, which probably would be cancelled if his health broke down.
