NAVY LEAGUE EFFORT.
GIFTS FOR SAILORS' WIVES. A gift afternoon, arranged by the Navy League ladies' committee, of which Mrs. R. W. Gallaugher is president, was held in the league rooms yesterday afternoon. A generous response was forthcoming in n, wonderful array of woollen garments which included children's frocks, jumpers and articles of all kinds, which were cosy, useful and artistically designed. The gifts, which were received from workers for the league, are to be sent to England for distribution among sailors' wives and children. It is hoped they will arrive in time to be distributed on Nelson Day, October 21.
Mrs. Hutchison, of Onehimga, one of the oldest members of the league, contributed gifts to the number of 70 articles, and the Diocesan High School and the Takapuna school sent most acceptable parcels. During the afternoon an enjoyable musical programme was contributed and afternoon tea was served.
An interesting address touching on the necessity for naval defence was given by Commander J. E. Middleton, secretary of the Auckland branch of the Navy League. He emphasised the need of arousing the interest of school children in the Navy, and asked for the assistance of members of the league in promoting children's branches. Every opportunity should be taken to extend their knowledge of the work of the Navy. They should be taught to realise the necessity for adequate naval defence.
