ENCOURAGEMENT OF THRIFT.

SUGGESTION FOR THE COUNTRY. SCHOOL SITE AT MOUNT ALBERT. Ibo Auckland Education Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. A. Burns, presiding. A letter Mas received from the Chief Postmaster, Auckland, regarding the adoption of the thrift scheme submitted by the Auckland Savings Bank, and asking whether the Post Office Savings Bank system of stamp collection cards could be adopted in country schools. It w&s pointed out that there were 185 Post Office Savings Bank branches in the Auckland district. The board considered that country children as well as town children should be encouraged in the habit of thrift and the matter was referred to the teachers. A deputation from the Alfristoa School Committee waited on the board to support a request for the purchase of additional land for the school. The present site, is one acre, and the amount asked for the purchase of the additional two acres required was £2OO an acre. It was considered that this price was too high, and the board decided to secure the land under the Public Works Act. The department pointed out that there was spare accommodation at the Onehunga school, and suggested taking advantage of this. The chairman stated that thero were only vacancies for 40 pupils at Onehunga and the matter was referred to the advisory inspector to report. In reply to a request from the Auckland Primary School Committees' Association that each school be equipped with an adequate supply of first-aid appliances and material to cope with any accident happening at school, the. department stated that it already subsidised sums raised locally up to a reasonable amount. That was all that could be done at pro sent. The department approved of the purchase of a block of land at Mount Albert for the erection of a school.
