DEVONPORT PROPOSALS
KING EDWARD PARADE.
THE IMPROVEMENT SCHEME. BETTER BATHING FACILITIES. The construction of a sea wall along King Edward Parade, Devonport, which is to be undertaken immediately as part of the unemployed relief work, is to form part of a comprehensive scheme which the Devonport Borough Council proposes to carry in conjunction with the Harbour Board when the new ferry wharf at Devonport is being built. The recent storm made severe inroads into King Edward Parade with the result that in some parts of the road two vehicles can barely pass. It is now proposed to carry the seawall out far enough to provide a roadway one hundred feet in width. The wall will commence at the Naval Reserve and continue along the waterfront to Anno Street. It is then proposed in conjunction with the Harbour. Board to resume an area of nearly four acres from Anne Street to Mary Street, thus reducing the length of the new wharf by half. The scheme is so arranged that the present beach opposite Windsor Reserve will be retained and will be converted into a boating pool suitable for bathing at any state of the tide. The urgent need of additional vehicle accommodation on the waterfront for buses will be provided, thereby relieving the congestion which now takes place at rush hours. Tho proposed scheme was outlined by the resident engineer last evening to a deputation of residents from King Edward Parade and a conference between the Borough Council and the engineer for the Harbour Board is to be arranged in order to co-ordinate the carrying out of the scheme with that of tho Harbour Board when the new wharf is being built.
