ENTERING MAIN ROADS.
the duty of motorists. DEFINITION BY MAGISTRATE. [by TELEGRAPH. —OWN correspondent. ] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The duty of a motor driver coming into a main road' from a drive-way was defined by Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Petone Magistrate's Court to-day, when Hercules Nicholl was charged with negligently driving a car out of the entrance to the Taita Hotel last April. "I think the defendant was negligent in two respects," said the magistrate. "First, it is the duty of anyone driving a car out of a narrow way to be travelling at such a speed that he can pull np within a foot. The defendant admits tnat he was going at seven miles an hour. Secondly, as the defendant had to cross the road to get on to his correct side, his first duty was to sec that the road w;is clear of approaching vehicles on his right, whereas defendant admits that he looked first to his left and did not see the car which approached on his right until he was half-way across the road. "However, as it was not a case of gross negligence, I will merely order him to pay the costs, which amount to £6 ° S The case arose through the defendant's car colliding with another car.
