RELIEF EXPENDITURE.

AUCKLAND SUBSCRIPTIONS. HOW THE MONEY IS SPENT. POLICY OF THE COMMITTEE. Voluntary subscriptions and donations, amounting to approximately £2OO, have been received by the Auckland Unemployment Committes during the six weeks it has been in existence and the money has been handed in equal portions to the Salvation Army and the Rev. Jasper Calder, Auckland City Missioner, to aid the unemployed requiring assistance. Donations totalling £l2 lis 9d were notified at the meeting of the committee yesterday, £ll Is 9d being sent by the Point Chevalier branch of the Labour Party, the result of a concert held in the interests of the unemployed. Mrs. D. Hamilton, of Rocky Nook, sent £1 and an anonymous giver 10s. When it was proposed that the money should be handed to the Salvation Army and Mr. Calder, Mrs. A. J. Dreaver, who has been associated with the women's unemployment committee at the Trades Hall, asked if the money would go into the general funds of the Salvation Army and the City Mission. She said her people wished to know what was becoming' of tho money as tho unemployed were applying to them for assistance. They, were not desirous of doing relief work, their sole desire being to place the women in employment. The Salvation Army and the City Mission were best able to attend to the relief work, but questions had been asked about the disposal of the money handed to tho committee. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, who presided, said the committee had not asked for subscriptions and did not want to set up any relief organisation. It had been set up to find employment and the sooner the problem was solved the better the committee would bo pleased. However, certain money had been received and had been handed to the' Salvation Army and Mr. Calder as those best able to make the greatest use of it.

Staff-Captain Daviea, of the Salvation Army, said the money received from tho committee had been used exclusively in the relief of unemployed, and a special account was being kept. None of it went into the general funds of his organisation. The acting-town clerk, Mr. J. Melling, who is secretary to the committee, said there was a clear understanding that such moneys were to be expended on necessitous cases arising from unemployment. Mr. Calder said he also kept a separate account for the money received from the committee. None of it was used for stipends or anything of that kind, but was devoted solely to relief. There were to many applications for relief that the money did not go very far and the mission was drawing to the absolute limit on its own funds for .this purpose. . NEWMABKET LOAN WORK. THE OUTHWAITE RESERVE. SUM OF £3OOO TO BE RAISED. A special meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held yesterday, when the resolution passed on July 5 to raise £3OQO to relieve unemployment was confirmed. It is intended to spend the money on improving the area in Park Road known as Outhwaite's Park. The reserve will be ornamented with rockeries and supplied with a children's playground. ' The term of the loan is 20 years, pro■yisio'n being made for a sinking fund of not less than 2£ per cent. per annum. The loan carries a special rate of |d in the £ on the ratable property of the borough. WOBK NOT ACCEPTED. UNEMPLOYED MAN'S ACTION. i [B7 TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. Mr. S.
