CHARGE OF ASSAULT.
ELDERLY MAN'S COMPLAINT. ACCUSED SENT FOR TRIAL. In the Police Court yesterday Charles Woods, aged 46, was charged with assaulting William Hardwick, aged 73, at Penrose on May 29, causing bodily harm. "I wanted to see Mr. Woods, sen., about some leaking tubs at my place," said complainant. "Accused struck me a blow and I fell. When I got up he knocked me down again and kicked my ankle. I said to him 'You have broken my leg.' When I tried to get up again he knocked me and my missus over the clothes prop." Witness said that as a result of Ins injuries lie was in the hospital for 28 days. His ankle bone had been broken. During the day he had two classes of ale. Accused, however, was drunk. Harry Corbett, brother-in-law of accused, said he saw both accused and complainant on the ground. Accused had had a few drinks but was not incapable of knowing what he was doing. Hardwick was not sober, judging by tire language ho used. In a statement made to the police accused said he had had three pints of beer on the day in question. He alleged that complainant was fairly drunk. Complainant first struck him a blow and accused then pushed him and he fell down.
Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in a suretv of £SO.
