BOXING TOURNAMENT.

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE ELIMINATING ROUNDS. SOME EXCITING CONTESTS. The Auckland amateur boxing championship tournament under the auspices of the Northern Boxing Association was opened at the Town Hall last evening. There was a fair attendance. The boxing in most of the divisions was excellent, the light-weight contest between J. Smith, of Taumarunui, and M. A. Peryer being a great bout. The semi-finals and finals will be contested this evening. Following are the results of the eliminating rounds:— FLY-WEIGHTS. I\. McLachlan, 7st 01b, v. J- Warne (Waihi), 6st 1041b.—The disparity in weight was a great handicap to the Waihi boy but he battled very gamely. However, McLachlan proved too strong for him and was adjudged the winner. A Porteous, 7st 9|lb, v. R, Stewart, 7st 91b.—In a brisk opening round Stewart u;sed both hands well to the body and scored one or two lefts to the head. Porteous was equally busy and scored well to the body. It was a fight all the way in the final round. Stewart boxed confidently and obtained the decision. FEATHER-WEIGHTS. E. Saxon, 9st, v. G. Smith, 9st.—There was some clever boxing in the initial round. Saxon plied a very busy left to the face and scored frequently. Smith landed some good lefts and rights to the bodv, but missed with right and left swings. Smith proved the. stronger in the second round at the end of which Saxon retired owing to an injury to his !U1 D. l ' Johnson. Bst. 91b., v. V. Rickard, Bst. lllb.—Johnson adopted rushing tactics from the outset and bothered his opponent for a time. Rickard then measured his man and landed repeatedly with lefts and rights to the jaw. Before the round ended Johnson was in a bad way and the referee intervened to declare Rickard the winner. F. Clarke, Bst. 51b., v. G. Leslie, Bst. Bilb. —There were some good exchanges in the first round, but Clarke was generally the aggressor. Both lads were tired in the third round. Clarke finished the stronger and received the verdict. It Hook way, Bst. 81b., v. C. Durrant, Hst. 81b.—Hookway was down for a moment in the " first round, but subsequently carried the battle to his opponent, using a left to advantage. In the second round Hookway scored freely with both hands. Hookway maintained his advantage in the final round and received the verdict. LIGHT-WEIGHTS. L. Leach, 9st. 121b., v. J. E. Rudling, fist. 91b. —The first round was boxed at a good pace. Loach used his left well, but Rudling was the mors aggressive. Li tho third round Leach made a great effort to even matters but failed. Rudling received the award, H. Dyson, Bst. Bib,, v. T. Slattery, 9st. 101b.—Both lads proved to be snappy twohanded boxers and sot a lively nac<K Slattery was the heavier hitter and toward the end of the first round landed with left and right to tho jaw, knoAing out his opponent. C. Broad foot, 9st. 6Jlb. (Waihi), v. G. Conmeo, 9st. B|lb.—The pair set a hurricane pace, using lefts and rights to the head and body indiscriminately. The last round was very evenly contested, but Broadfoot had amassed the greater number of points and was adjudged the winner.

J. Smith (Taumarunui), 9st 71b., v. M, A. Peryer, 9st. lUlb.—Peryer started very aggressively, but Smith presented » good defence, and toward the end took a strong hand in attack, scoring . rc?eatedly with heavy rights to the body. he third round was a battle all the way The judges disagreed, and the referee ordt. Ed an extra round,. at the end of which Peryer was adjudged the winner.. J. Cording, 10st., v. B. Nelson, lOst.—Tho bout did not last long. Nelson landed a right to tha body and his opponent sank to the canvas to be counted out. T. Slatterv, 9st. 101b., v. H. F. Unwin, 9st. 121b.—After a brisk opening S'attery landed a short right to the body in the first round, and Unwin went to the boards for the count. C. Broadfoot, 9sb, 61b., v. J. E. Rudling, 9st. 91b.—There was little between tho pair in the first round. Broadfoot had the longer reach and used his left well, but found Rudling very shifty. Broadfoot did the better work in the concluding round and received the reward. WELTER-WEIGHTS. C. Leslie, lOst s£lb., v. R. La Roussel, lOst, 31b.—There were some lively exchanges in tho first round, La Roussel doing most of the attacking. Leslie used his left well at times. The verdict went to La Roussel. T. Burns, lOst. 31b., t. R. Thompson,* 9st. 10!b.—It was a slogging first round with Thompson forcing his opponent round the ring looking for an opening to land a convincing right to the jaW. Halfway through the final round Thompson rushed Burns on to the ropes with such force that the ring collapsed. The referee declared Thompson tho winner. MIDDLE-WEIGHTS. M. Herewini, list. 31b., v. D. Mitchell, lOst. 121b.-—Herewini opened aggressively but swung wildly and was unable to penetrate Mitchell's smother. The latter used a straight left. Herewini was very tired in the final round, but survived a trying time. .Mitchell received the verdict. CRUISER-WEIGHTS. C. Hayden, list. 101b., v. A. Hogg (Hamilton), list. 71b.—In the first round hooked his left well to the body and jaw but missed with well-meant rights to the head. In tho final round Hogg had Hayden in a bad way when the referee intervened and declared Hogg tho winner. P. McCarthy, 12st. 71b., v. J. Saunders, 12st. 2lb.—There was not much doing in the first round. Tho last round was full of action. McCarthy landed left and right to the head early in tho session but Saunders fought back well. Subsequently McCarthy used his left to good effect and was adjudged the winner.
