AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS.

TO-DAY'S ILLUSTRATIONS.

ARRAY OF TOPICAL SUBJECTS.

To-day's issue of the Auckland Weekly contains a large pictorial section remarkable for .up-to-date news photographs, possessing great variety and a high- standard of interest. Outstanding, perhaps, among many striking features, are the illustrations dealing with the Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie. The frontispiece, is devoted to thrilling incidents of the hurdle races* showing mishaps at various jumps and -the mud-bespattered riders on the opening day. A particularly fine pictorial record ot the Great Northern Steeplechase will be found on the centre double-page. Interesting stages of a memorable contest have been captured -by the camera and faithfully reproduced on a large scale. Samoa's enthusiastic Welcome to the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and liady Alice Fergusson, furnishes a fine series of photographs, while another very bright, page is composed of live snapshots " secured at recent meets of the Dannevirke and HawkeV Bay hounds. Interesting pictures, too; are those illustrating the quest for mutton-birds on lonely Southern islands.

A page that'is'bound to he examined with keen interest is one which-illustrates the origin and process of generating electrci power for New Plymouth. The series is most complete, starting with the snowfed streams on the summit of Mount Egmont and ending with the trams being driven by hydro-electric power in Taranaki's capital. The great, display of produce at the Waikato Winter Show is also the subject of several interesting photographs. , Many further topical subjects include: New whaling launches for Tory Channel; important work on the Auckland to'Westfield railway deviation • the prosperous town of Hawera; motoring accident at Hamilton; yachting tragedy at Greymouth; shooting wild geese and swans near Featherston; memorial to the late Dr. J. A. R. Menzies at Wyndham; a red-letter day at Roseneath; the wrecked launch Koa and her crew, inter-university hockey at Wellington; personalities of the week; hurricane at Palmerston Island; and the latest pictures received by overseas mails.
