CANTERBURY NOTES.

THE ADDINGTON MEETING.

[Bit TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday,

The feature of the racing on the opening day of the Canterbunry Park Meeting was the brilliant performance of Waitaki Girl in winning the King George Handicap from the back mark. She started slowly, but after going a mile she cut her opponents down as if they had been fourth-raters, and eventually won easily. She has the great record of five wins in six starts, while in the other race she finished third, registering 4m 225, one of the best performances ever recorded in the Dominion over two mile 3. Apart from her speed, which entitles her to rank probably as the best pacing mare ever seen in the Dominion, she ia now reli able at all stages of a race, and she is not yet at the limit of her powers. She was a starter to-day in the mile and a-quarter event, but she did not go oS right, a mistake that was the result of bad luck. Happy Rosa was responsible for a very attractive performance when she won the Yaldhurst Handicap at Addington. Its merit was enhanced by the fact that she lost a lot of ground through mixing her gait early, but she showed great speed once she got going, and trotting very solidly, she ha<l the race in safe keeping two furlongs from home.

Event won the principal race at Addington ou Saturday in great style. Ho waa always well placed and ho stayed on like a horse who will do even better next season.

Prince Pointer paced two sound races at Aldington and ho may soon be a winner. He may he racing in Auckland this month. The three-year-old Native Chief was unlucky to be beaten in the Stewards' Handicap at Addington, He began slowly, but once ho got going his great brilliancy soon carried him to a good position. He was in front at the entrance to the straight, apparently with the race at his mercy. A little further on he was allowed to ease up a little, and when A. Hendricksen sent Cardinal Logan after him at top speed the three-year-old was unable to get going again, being beaten by a narrow margin in the last stride.

Daphne Wildwood was responsible for two attractive performances i*t Addington on Saturday. After finishing close up to theplaced horses in the mile harness event, she came out in the next race and beat some useful mile saddle horses, her success being due to superior stamina. The Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting, to be held next Saturday, is the last trotting fixture of the season in these parts. As usual, the fields will be very large. The Sapling Stakes, the classic two-year-old race, will have about nine starters, and the presence of several youngsters by Rey de Oro and Author Dillon will add to the interest. A number of Canterbury owners intend patronising the winter meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, and they will go north immediately the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting is finished. The champion pacing mare Onyx is still enjoying a spell at Now Brighton, but it is probable that she will be put into work again shortly. * She will not be hurried, however, and may not be raced until November. Minion Derby has finished his racing career in the Dominion, and he was reshipped to Australia this week. He showed brilliant form during the short time he was in W. J. Tomkir.son's stable, winding •up with two miles in 4m 2'2 2-ss, and a mile and a-quarter in the record time of 2m 40 1-Ss, which he established when he filled third place at Addington at Easier.
