TE AWAMUTU NEWS.

LIGHTING BUSINESS AREA.

NEW PULPIT FOR ST. JOHN'S

[BIT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday.

A scheme evolved by the Power Board for lighting practically all the shop verandahs and shop-fronts in the t business area pvery evening until midnight was approved by the Te Awamutu Borough Council last evening.

The magnificent redwood tree on a small reserve at the corner of Alexandra and Mutu Streets in the centre of Te Awamutu, is shortly to be removed, as it is considered a menace to public safety. The. spreading roots have been drastically cut back until the tree appears likely to fall during a gale. The tree is one of the largest and most handsome redwoods in the Dominion. When subject of its removal was under discussion at last evening's meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor remarked that many people would regret the removal of such a fine tree, and hoped someone would suggest a practicable method of .retaining it. There has just been installed in the historic St, John's Anglican Church a very fine piece of craftsmanship in the form of a pulpit, the gift of an anonymous donor. The former pulpit had done duty for very many years. In fact,' it probably dates from the building of the church in the very early days, and as it was in an advanced stage of decay, the new pulpit is a very acceptable gift. The' Te Awamutu Cemetery Board last evening decided to set aside a portion of the public cemetery for Indians in accordance With the recommendation of the Department of Internal Affairs.

The principle of kerbside petrol pumps was approved recently by the Borough Council, but that body is still in a difficulty as s£o where such pumps should be located. Last evening some time was occupied by a discussion following the granting of a permit to erect a pump at a street corner in front of a local garage. Finally the garage proprietor was-asked to place the pump further away from th« cornel - . , .
