LIFE-SAVING APPARATUS. LEASE OF CITY MARKET LAND. The Auckland Harbour Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, presiding. The board approved the provision of a half-ton electric hoist and runway at a cost of £3OO for 'the new wharf at Onehunga. A letter from the Marine Department conveyed the thanks of the Minister for the board's willingness to make its" rocket and life-saving apparatus available should it be required outside the Auckland harbour limits. The Government was prepared to undertake the liability for death or accident to any of the crew supplied by the Royal Naval Reserve in such circumstances.
An inquiry was recently received from the City Council concerning-the leasing of the unoccupied portioa* "of the land adjoining the City Markets, the board being asked to modify the condition that the premses erected on the site must be continuously used for public or municipal markets in order to allow firms to lease the land for the purpose of erecting petrol tanks and pumps. The board in committee recommended that a reply be sent to the effect that the board had no power to alter the lease but would offer no objection to the council sub-leasing, the area as indicated . provided the sub-leases terminated with the present tenants' leases. . The board approved the form of a bond submitted on behalf of the British Imperial Gil Company (N.Z.j, Ltd., in connection with the insurance on buildings and fixed the amount at £IO,OOO. The chairman said the applicants had asked to be allowed to delete the usual insurance clause in the lease and the Finance Committee had agreed to this provided a bond was entered into.
