CHARGE OF THEFT.
A WALLET AND STRANGERS. INCIDENT IN AN HOTEL. [BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.} CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. In the Police Coari to-day, before Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., M. C. McDonald, steeplechase rider, and William Mcßay, stable hand, of Woodville;' were charged with the theft of £l7 from the person of Thomas Henderson on May 27, Chief-Detective T.' Gibson, who prosecuted, intimated that there was a third man who was wanted, but he had not been located. ■ Henderson stated that he was approached by a stranger and they subsequently went to an hotel, where he was introduced to two other men. Witness produced his wallet and gave one man £1 for a bet on a horse, putting his wallet back into his pocket. After further conversation the man he first met said: "You'll be all right for the racing game. Let me feel your weight." The man lifted witness up and tipped him to one side. He did not remember feeling anything about his pockets-, but when lie went away soon after his wallet was missing. He had then reported the matter to the police. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved thai? defence and were committed for trial.
