COUNT ALMOST COMPLETED. PRESENT INCREASE 126,500, [Fnoil OUR. OWN COlll'. ESP ONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. . "A report furnished "to ! this moriiing by the Government Statistician, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, shows that the majority of the census results are now to hand," said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. R, F. Bollard, to-day, ''and while a complete survey is hot yet possible the general trend of the population movement is becoming evident. Returns which have so far come to hand show a total population of 1,227,000 for the area completed. This area in 1921, had a population of 1,100,500, and therefore the increase so far noted is 126,500, equivalent to 11.5 per cent." Mr. Bollard said that the figures placed before him by, the statistician showed that the population of New Zealand was still moving northward. "Out of the gain of 126,500 credited at this stage," he remarked,' "the North Island claims 87,800, ajid the South Island 38,700. All the provincial - districts show increased populations, the largest absolute gains occurring in the Auckland district (51,600) and the Wellington district (27,600). The continuation of the urban drift is still being manifested. The total train recorded for the completed cities, borouphs and independent town districts (105,800) considerably outweighs that for counties and lesser town districts (20,700)."
