The Amberley Racing Club wag on a winner when it received permission to hold its meeting to-day at Riccarton. Last year, when racing on its own course, the totali-sr-tor investments were only £9105 10s, while to-d.-.y, .with fine weather, a large attendance was attracted to Riccarton and £21,059 10s went through the machine for £lO5 less rrizs mjney. As a result the club should show a substantial profit over the meeting. Kilris was made a warm favourite for the Eranckcnfield Handicap to-day, but after looking a winner to the distance she failed to star, Sayonara wearing her down at the finish. As was the case when he> scored at Hororaia just before Easter the winner paid ft big dividend.. He was ridden by G. Salt, who was having his first mount since he completed his apprenticeship.
Precious showed a fiii3 turn of speed in winning the Novice Stakes to-day, but the Sutala filly does not look like making a stayer. , It is 'not often that Sir George Clifford starts a horse twice on tho sarno day, but he broke the rule with Serotina. She was running on at the end of the Novice Stakes, in which she finished second to Precibus, and she came out later to make an exhibition of her opponents in the Glasnevin. Hack Handicap. She is standing up to her racing well, and though never likoly to be a good one, she will earn further successes. The two-year-old filly Zarisee was prime favourite for the Novice Stakes to-day but ehe never looked like a winner at. any stage.
Fresco was responsible for another good performance to-day when ho the Amberley Cup. He jumped out well, hut he was allowed to drop back, ccming on with a fine run in the straight. It was intended to spell him after the South Canterbury meeting, but with tho Amberley fixture so handy F- Christmas decided to give him another) run. He will start next week on a spell for a couple of months, after, which he will be got ready for the New Zealand Cup.
The Harp ran a solid race in the Amberley Cup and only failed in the last few strides. He should bo a winner very soon.
Tarleton wa3 strongly fancied for the Amberley Cup. but after being well placed all the way his finishing effort was disappointing. He has dono a, lot of racing this season without scoring a v.'in. Deucalion did not race up to expectations in tho 'Amberley Cup. though he came on the scene with a* late run to_ get third place. He should be capable of something Detter before the season end 3. Rex Beale, a son of the well-known jockey J. Beale, received his apprentice jockey's license ca few day 3 ago and had his first mount on Lady Clarenceux in the Amberley Cup, in which his father rode Deucalion. The youngster shaped quit© well, as he did later in the day on Clareina, and he ehould be hoard of nest season.
The West Coast gelding Booster put up a nic; performance in winning the Seadown Handicap to-day. He was one of the leadeys/ all the way. This is a useful gelding.
Golct Brick was a great disappointment ;n the Seadown Handicap. Etc was one of the early leaders, but he only lasted half a-mile.
Gay Queen cat up badly in the Glasnevin Hack Handicap, for which she was a warm favourite. Sho was outpaced from the start, and never looked dangerous. She is better suited for longer goings. Chickwheat v;a3 backed with great confidence in the Bloomfield Welter Handicap, but his chance v.as settled at the start, as he grot a bump and was nearly on his nose. Para, showed a lot of speed in the Bloomfield Welter Handicap, but just lasted long enough to stall of? Opkir's late challenge. Para is racing consistently and may win again soon. Ophir will bo a much better horse next time he races, and he should be in mind. Mr. G. D. Greenwood purchased a yearling r.t the Sydney sales, but beyond the fact that ho is by Demosthenes I have learned nothing about him yet. G. J. Pine has recominissiof.ied the two-year-old Paper Boy after a short spell. Like most of this aire's progeny he has plenty of speed, but so far lie has not quite realised expectations. Pine will have Paper Hose and Crossbon in work again shortly. A yearling brother to Precious by Sutala from Koden is the latest addition to the team of. K. J. and P. V. Mason. Th'e youngster lias been broken in, and he is a regular visitor to the tracks. Charlatan pleased greatly in a school over eight'of the steeplechase farnceg at Iliccarton on Tuesday.- Ho went at a solid paco and cleared the last obstacle in fine stylo. The Winkie gelding is in great heart for Die winter campaign. He left on Thursday night, for the North. After competing at tbo Egmont meeting he will go to Warigaiiui. His future movements will depend on his form, but if he runs up to expectations he will travel on to Ellerslie. F. C. Porter i 3 in charge and Z. Shaw has gone with him to do the riding. Lucinettq has finished her racing career and shb will take up stud life next season. The daughter of Martian and Lady Lucy is at present having a spell at Mr. G. Gerard's property in Fend a lion, but she will leave shortly for Mr. G. M. Currio's stud, arrangements having been made to mate her with Limond. Rapier has contracted a cold and he is now having a spell. Red Wink in getting through useful tasks, but lie is not to be hurried, tlio intention being to get him ready by November. K \m far from certain that he will survive a preparation, but if he remains sound lie yil| be a welcome addition to tbo Dominion s good horaes. Onflamb has been ea<-ed in his work as a result of lameness, which developed after lie returned from the South Canterbury meeting. It is bad luck to have io spell ' ' nl . present, us he was improving fast, r. Christmas doss not. anticipate anything P"i-io>is. however, and bo hopes to have the re.ding ready to race again at the Duncdin ib'bs meeting next month. xfie Absurd gelding Hadiac has gone into ' • Wormalil a stable to h* got ready for j7 m ping engagements. He has not done much racing since. he was purchased by Mr. J Gri 3 g following on a win over b 11 ®,?; I 1" ra " f l Rational meeting of • u He , ni Y be lnecl '-tPi- over country, ono though ho may utver atay a lonj journey, ho should pay his way in ohorfdis'ance steeplechases. Philanderer i 3 makmg a good recovery from the bruised foot that prevented him from racing on the second day of the South Canterbury meeting, but 11. Alexander will not. have him in active work again for a few v/?cks. The steeplechaser Blue Hall has freshened np after a few days' rest, and J 13 Pearson n"w has him in regular work a~ain •f. B. Pearson bus recornmissioned" To Kawa after a spell of over six months. The Maniapoto gelding looks very much in iho rongh ?t present and some time will elapse be f ore b" is ready to rncr. Cornstalk has returned his place as a memhjfv of H. Nurse's active division. Be nnowed' a lot of speed early, but so far he has not. come up to expectations. J?. D. Jones is keeping Limerick in useful work, but the tasks of the crack two-year old are only of an easy character.
