OBITUARY.
MR. RICHARD SMITH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN C3r.P-ESFONDENT..] MATAMATA, Thursday. One. of the earliest and most- valued settlers of tlie Matamata district, Mr. Richard Smith, passed away at Thames on Wednesday. The late Mr. Smith succeeded in the first ballot when the Firth Estate was cut up over 20 years ago, drawing a holding on Waharoa Road East, next to Mr. W. Egan's. Being industrious and a good farmer, he cleared his holding and created a very creditable farm. out of it. He tos a man who, even in those strenuous times, took an active interest in the public life of the district. He was .one of the foundation members of the Matamata Agricultural and Pastoral Association and served on school committees, the hall committee and other bodies. When he left Matamata 10 years ago ho was tendered a farewell in the Town HalL From Matamata the late Mr. Smith went to Whangarei and then to Dargaville and later to Thames. He -leaves a widow and family.
