RACING.

SEASON'S FIXTURES. /. May. 7, B—Marlborough Racing Club. May IJVls—Egmont Racing Club. May 20, 22—Wanganui Jockey Club. June 1, 3, s—Dunedin Jockey Club. June 3, 0, 7—Auckland Racing Club. ) NOTES BY PHAETON. Illumination is apparently to be given a trial at the winter fixtures. He has been nominated) for the Cornwall Handicap, and with the sting out of the ground may find the gojmar to his liking. Hia last appearance win in tho Avondale Cup last September, av.d the spell may have worked the necessary improvement in the handsome son of Limelight iind Fleet Street.

Ir. the nominations for the chief events ot tho forthcoming Auckland winter meeting two horses—Ngata and Tail Timber Kha.v the distinction of being ontercd for the Great Northern Hurdle Race and the Cornwall Handicap, tho latter the thief flat event on the programme. Ngata is also entered for tho Great Northern Steeplechase. but Tall, Timber 3 owner evidently has 110 intention of putting his horse over the big fences this season. Ngata iB an experienced hurdler, but Tail limber has yet to face the starter in a hurdle event.

Rehuiai. who has been accorded a nomination in the Great Northern Hurdles, is said to bo a promising hurdler. She is s, five-year-old daughter of Lucul.laa and Aquatis and acts well in heavy going. Last season she performed creditably 011 the flat, winning four times out of 26 starts. She was second three times and third 011 four occasions. Rehutai was given a run in a hack hurdle race at the Opunake meeting cn March 11, but failed to gain & pluce.

Excellent form has been shown by a number of hacks that have competed at meetings in • the Auckland district this season. „ Two descendants! of Pohdamon in White Fane and Eh Timi are exceptionally promising. The latter is a fine cut for n hurdler, but is somewhat headstrong at present. Two Ellersjic-t rained backs in Seran?/ and Chairman have also performed more than creditably. The former has had four wins in succession, and the latter, after competing successfully in hack events, showed at the Waikalo meeting that he could hold his own in open company. Ned Ke'ly. who wop a double at Te Rapa, is also worthy of mention.

Perle de Leon is given credit for two fine performances at the Hawke's Bay meeting at Hastings. He won the Autumn Handicap (ore mile and a furlong) on the first day yvi.th 8.4, and was second in the Ohiti Handicap, another nine-furlong race, oil the second day. carrying 9.0. In each rare he was tai'.ed off for the most part and came with a fine burst of speed in the straight. Bred as ho is, it is not surprising to se'e him turn out well s:nce his dam, Perle d'Or (bv Multiform —x\ura). conies from cno of the hest families in the New Zeitland or Australian Stud Book. She is sister to tho famous Golden Slipper, who brought the then record price of 4100gns at the late Mr. G. G. Stead's dispersal salo; and Perle d'Or herself brought thi good price of 2CoCgns. Perle de Leon's granddam. Aura, is the third dam of Desert Gold and Nigger Minstrel.

Landbird is already mentioned in connection with tho Great Northern double. Though defeated recent'y at Hastings, it is stated that the Finland selding was not quite ready and is capable of much improvement. He is being schooled, over tho steeplechase fences at Hastings and should be in good form for the Auckland ■witter meeting.

Possibly the most improved competitor over steeplechase courses last season was Birkenella (says an exchange). In his eitrfy efforts he simply scrambled over his jumps, but after a little racing Birkenella handled tho Trentham and difficult Riccarton courses remarkably well—better, in fact, than 99 per cent, of the horse 3; that raced there. Trainer W. Garrett has Birkenella well forward in view of his Great Northern engagements. but the Ellerslie " country" does not suit this gelding, and he can be depended qn to' do better at Trentham and Riccarton.

The correct method of applying the rule dealing with tho running of a race in divisions in cases where the competitors exceed tho pafoty number, is set out in a circular issued by the Auckland District Committee to the secretaries of Auckland district totalisator clubs. This action has been taken to establish uniformity of method which hitherto has not existed. C'aro has been taken, to demonstrate the correct method, and racing club officials should now have 110 difficulty in making divisions strictly in terms of the rule bearing on the subject. The circular also refers to tho question of clubs dividing races in those cases where mere arc eight events provided on ti*e original programme, and increasing tho ■nriza mopey as well a» allotting second and third prizes in eaca division. Such procedure, it is -stated, is distinctly opposed to tae rules, which provide that 110 programme once approved by tho District Committee shall not be altered without its authority, in cases of races run in divisions, where it is illegal to operato tho totalisator on each <iivision, only the winning horse in each division shall fhare in tho prize money, the two winners taking the whole o! tho stakes payable to the placed horses in equal shares. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. There was a little jumping at Elle.rslie yesterday. Just Quietly (ft. Beer) cleared tour hurdles in good style. Llewellyn (S» Henderson) and Flowing Bowl (A. Rutherford) ynve a nice exhibition over six hurdles. Eton Town (C. Mcl<ae) jumped two hurdles well, and Nmcosia (E. Rue) shaped satisfactorily over tho pony hurdles.

The horses owned by Mr. J. A. Taylor, cf Wellington, are in future to be trained by N. Cunningham at 121-erslie. Tha horses are expected to arrive front Trentham in charge of W. Ryan, v.'ho went south on Tuesday to brimt them to Auckland. They are 'i reshara, Royal Picture, a colt by Paladin from Lovelorn, and a illl.v by Paper Money from Kiliena.

The racing he had at To Rapa will bo beneficial to Merry Damon, who ran a very creditable third in the sprint event on Monday. Following on a stoppage in his work n month ago he was a little backward. Now that he is going along well ho should do better at his next appearance.

There was good support for KiUocra in his engagements at To Rapa. but lie never looked dangerous in- either, although he was running on at the finish. Lack of bril lianey in the early stages is a hindrance to. him in sorint events and he mav fare better at a mile than six furlongs.

Tho three-year-old King Lu seems to be coming on again and ran two good races at To Rapa. lie finished close up fourth in tho big mile event on Monday and on that showing appears likely to return to tho winning list in the 'near future.

It is stated that tho steeplechaser Pittsworth is under offer to a Dunedin sportsman.

Tho two-vear-old Lunette is a neat filly and showed sonio pare in her first start at To Rapa. She is rather green yet and will bo benefited bv l«r two runs. Lunette 13 by Nassau from Lady Frisco, therefore » half-sister to White Comet.

Rncing is improving Star Comet and lie finished well info third place in tho Ohirtewai Handicap at Te Rapa 011 Monday, por one that has only been in work a short time ho has shaped .creditably and should be. a useful hack next season.

Lucy Glitters displayed sufficient pace at To'Rapa to suppest that she may be capable of winning in minor_ company when thoroughly seasoned. She is n three-year-old fill.v by Swift Flight from Fallwin.

It is the intention of J. Anderton to tako Quinette. Prince Abbey and Alfort to Hawera for the Egmo\i( winter meeting, whem Alfort is to make his debut as a hurdler.

For one that showed as much promise as a juvenile Hvde Park lias been a disappointment this season. It is in his favour that ho has not beon severely taxed and he may vet mature into a useful horse. Ho ran a fail- race in the Flying Handicap at Te Rapa on Monday.

Judge's Box and Winsome Boy hayo been working along steadily at Ellerslie and look nice and bright. They have engagements at Hawera next weeK.

Kin"field missed a p'ace in a back event at To Rapa. on Satnrdiw, but he made a bold bid for honours in Ihe Flying Handicap on Monday and was only beaten in the last few strides. This in a verv smart hack, who should be a useful sprinter next season.

Serang has been nominated for tho open sprint evpnis at tho Wanganui winter meeting All his racing hps been dono in h-ck events, but tho brililant manner in which be has wen in his latest races suggests that his elevation to open company will not stand in tho way of further success.

Considering -the short period be has been in training. Glenotus ran. "reditab'v in the steeplechase events at Te Ram. He pulled un tender on the second but was walking soundly yesterday. It is only a matter of him remaining sound to come back to form.

Sir Roseberrv has bepn infusing plenty of dnsh into his work and has been doing bis schooling -fnsks i" brillirtT t style. The mcin" he had at Whangprei considerable improvement in his condition and ho i<= going to be a very fit horse next month.

Constellation wont two good races at Te Rapa and notched two minor plnci-ngs. This i« a verv -usefn l hack vVn right and he may be more solid now than formerly.

.Tu=t Quietly inmred well in t -T *o schooling task" ho had nt Ellerslie this ■7-pcV Tt Fhov'd not. b<>> f°r want of jumping abi'itv if he fails to gather any success as a hurdler.
