COST OF THE NURSES' HOME.
Sir, —Your correspondent " Newmarket " mp.y Le, justifiably or otherwise, incensed at what appears to him to be an unwarranted expenditure of public money, but bis resentment would be just a little more understandable and more reasonable, were ho to confine his criticism to hard facts. One of his statements. taken in conjunction with his complaint that " there is no suggestion of economy," conveys an entirely erroneous impression and is one which any fair-minded person-must resent. I _ refer to his remark as follows: —"The sittingroom, with its pink carpet, is sufficiently luxurious for a bishop." A person naturally jumps to the conclusion that a gorgeous creation of the carpet-maker's art has been provided, whereas the article in question has been in use for fully 15 to 20 years and an inspection will reveal numerous evidences of patching. _ I think " Newmarket " might have qualified his disapproval by stating these facts, if he had a burning desire to mention the pink Carpet, the presence of which indicates, to me, a decided suggestion of economy! In regard to the general furnishing of the building, there is nothing ornate or unduly expensive in it, a statement which will be borne out by anyone qualified to judge. Everyone in Auckland knows that the premises are too commodious for the present staff, but " wake up, Newmarket " 'it won't be very long before a very much larger staff of nurses and sisters will be required, in view of the rapid growth of the hospital district and the commensurate increase in sickness and infirmity! Again, if vour correspondent is at all conversant with boards or councils of anv description, he does not need to be told that unanimity is not needed to carry a motion. . A unanimous decision is the exception rather than the rule, and on those grounds, your correspondent s contention that the board was not unanimous carries no weight. "Unto Caesar!"
