VV: m NGIN subject of experiment by scores of experts for 'ho last ten year's. Variable compression renders an engine efficient at all speeds, and under all loads. Its practical application has been recognised as a certain means of abolishing the vast losses which occur when an engine, .is running below its maximum. Many designs ha\e been put forward, the majority being based on some method of moving the cylinders to adapt the combustion space to suit the throttle opening. All these types havo failed to merit development. Many of them were freak engines of considerable complication. Inefficiency# in petrol engines is duo to variation in compression. When running at full speed, the throttle allows a full charge to enter the cylinders and it is compressed in the combustion chamber and fired under perfect conditions. Tho combustion chamber is usually proportioned so that a full charge is compressed to a tiressuro of 90lb. to the square inch. This is the most efficient figure. ... In fact, experiment shows that many cars work at compressions of only LfOlb. or 101b. when running slowly. The remedy is to arrange for automatic variation'of tho combustion space, so that the mixture will always be 901b. when fired. The Auckiandor's invention is said to ensure constant compression irrespective of speed. The test engine now being demonstrated locally seems quite simple. It has been adapted from a four-cylinder Daimler engine. The volumes of tho combustion chambers are varied by the movement of overhead pistons which descend to reduce the space above the regular working pistons. These overhead pistons have a range of movement of/ only half an inch, and an air pressure of 3001b. from behind kcep.s them floating,. If a small charge is drawn into the cylinders and tho compression tends to be light, tho air pressure automatically forces '.he overhead pistons down to r'educo the combustion area, and ensures a constant compression /of 90lb. irrespective of • the throttlo opening. The engine is on the fourcycle principle and poppet valves are replaced by a "D" rotary valve. Tho principle is nevertheless adaptable to two-cycle enTear Out and Post To-day. Messrs.
