BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. Hadfield, presiding. A telegram was read from the Mayor. Mr. E. G. Skeates, who is visiting Dunedin, regretting his inability to attend the meeting, especially as it was the anniversary of the council taking office. He conveyed his congratulations to the members on the results of the year.'s work, thanking them for their regular attendance, general keenness and loyalty. It was very creditable that not a sign of ill-feeling had passed over the council table. He was looking forward with pleasure to the new year's activities, when he hoped, with the council's cooperation, to make the borough a place to be proud of. The waterworks engineer reported that the month's consumption of water • had been 2.620,000 gallons. Lake Takapuna had fallen from" Ift 3in above high sea level to llin. The intake pipe at the pumping station had been extended 64ft. further out into the lake, the pipe being carried on trestles at a level of sft. below the original pipe line. The depth of water at the intake was now 185 ft. at a distance of 115 ft. from the edgo of the lake.
Four permits for new buildings were granted. Bus stops werfe approved in Hauraki Street at the intersection of Lower Crescent Road and at Mr. R. 0. White's chemist shop. The Auckland City Council wrote agreeing to allow an officer to visit Birkenhead on certain stated days £or the purpose of testing drivers and issuing licenses. It was decided to adopt this arrangement, and to thank the City Council for meeting the wishes of the council. The sum of £9l 17s 3d was received from the Auckland City Council for heavy traffic fees for the quarter ended March 31 last.
