£SOOO ROADS PROGRAMME. BITUMEN AND TAR-SEALING. [nv TELE«HAI'H. — OWN CO II RESPONDENT.] PUKKKOHE. Tuesday. Tito Pukekohe Borough Council met, the Mayor, Mr. John Routlev, presiding. On tiie recommendation of the Works Committee, it was decided that estimates be prepared for the re-construction of Manukau Road from blue metal to hiue metal, Queen Street, from King Street to Cnthcart's corner, and Ward Street, from Queen Street to Wellington Street, all to he bitumen-sealed, and also of tarsealing Ward Street from Wellington Street to Funi Road corner, all these works to lie financed bv raising the ten per cent, additional on the £20,000 roads allocation of the Public Services loan, together with the £3OOO of this allocation still unexpended, making a total of £SOOO available. The Mayor said this programme would mean a well-surfaced apprqach on all the main roads into the centre of the town. It was further decided that I'aerata Road, from the end of the present tarscaling to the corner of Kayes' Road, and the newlv-constructed portion of East Street, from the railway bridge to Totara Avenue, lie tar-sealed before the wet weather set in. Further recommendations of the committee adopted were that a gravel footpath be provided from Shirley Hospital, in Seddon Street, to Victoria Street and along the south side of Victoria Street past the new houses near Harrington Avenue, that, if available from the owner at a satisfactory price, the spawls in Dublin Street be crushed and put on the new formation to Mr. M. Hogan's gate, and that the following footpaths be tar-sealed to a width of five feet :—Queen Street, ' from King Street to Ward Street, north side of Tobin Street, and Seddon Street, from Albert Street to the Catholic Church. The reconstruction and scoria-coating of Carlton Road, at an estimated cost ofabout £2OO, including footpaths, was authorised, as was also formtion, improvement and gravelling on the Queen Street footpath from Nelson Street to Kitchener Road. The foreman, Mr. S. J. Clews, submitted an estimate of £BOO for continuing Edinhutgh Street through to connect with I'aorat a Road. It, was decided to ask those who petitioned for the continuation how much they were prepared ! to contribute toward the cost. It \\ as decide*! to make an annual ; charge of £lO 10s per annum for each street petrol bowser. The sum of £345 W as received as the council's share of last year's heavy traffic fees. The question of the establishment of ! municipal abattoirs for Pukekohe was referred to the Works Committee for report, together with particulars obtained from other councils which have abattoirs. The Mayor and Mr. D. R, Hamilton were deputed to confer with chairman and the engineer of the Franklin Power Board with a view to coming to an arrangement acceptable to the council for the pumping by electricity of the water for the borough supply.
