ASSAULT ON CONSTABLE. INCIDENT AT NEWMARKET. WOMAN, FINED FIVE POUNDS. The sequel to an incident in Newmarket on Tuesday was heard in the Police Court yesterday when Phyllis Boyle, aged 29, pleaded guilty to assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty, and using obsceno language. '* This woman and her husband were in Newmarket when the police found it necessary to arrest the latter for drunkenness," said Sergeant Calwell. " When the constable went to take the man in charge accused struck him on the head with a basket containing several bottles of beer, one of which broke. The constable was stunned for the time being and if another officer had not been there, there would have been serious trouble. The woman was before the Court in March of last year for assault and there are also other convictions against her. The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt: Why do you not behave yourself ? Accused: Well I have had a terrible lot of worry— The Magistrate: That does rs-fc justify you doing this. You will be fined £5, in default, 14 days' imprisonment on the first charge, and will be convicted and discharged on the second." FIGHT IN KHYBER PASS. " Both these men were found with their coats off fighting in Khyber Pass Road," said Sergeant Calwell in referring to Ernest Williams, nged 27, and Herman Schaefler aged 20, charged with fighting. Schaefler, who was the only one to appear, pleaded guilty. After hearing evidence the magistrate fined Williams £2 and Schaefler, £l. THEFT CHARGE ADJOURNED. A charge of stealing two pairs of boots, valued at £1 15s, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, was admitted by James Bryson, aged 48. In asking for h remand until next Thursday Chief-Detective Cummings stated that, a good deal of property had been recovered, but whether accused stole it or not he was not preapred to say at the moment. There were other charges pending against him. Accused was remanded, bail being allowed at £IOO. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Gerald Thomas Silk, aged 26, was remanded until this morning on a charge of stealing a silver watch, a silver matchbox and a gold chain and locket, of a total value of £25 10s, the property of John Joseph Clarkson. George Nixey, aged 26, was remanded to appear at Whangarei next Thursday, on a charge of fraudulently converting to his use £1 lis received from Ernest Jennings on terms requiring him to accouut for it to Ernest Sothern. Mary Smith, aged 52, was fined 10s, in default, 48 hours' imprisonment for drunkenness in Grey Street, ,and £2, in default, seven days' imprisonment for using obsceno language.
