OBITUARY.
MR. D. McGARVEY. The death in Auckland of Mr. D. Mc« Garvey, aged 70, severed a link with the early days of the Whakatane district. Born in Auckland. Mr. McGarvey went to Tnuranga as a young man and entered into business. Later he removed to Opotiki, and then' to Whakatane, where he resided for 40 years, he and his brother conducting a store-keeping business there and at Te Teko. Mr. McGarvey came back to Auckland about two years ago. He is survived./by six daughters and four sons. I I ' Mli! J. G. WALSH. The death' 6f ;Mr. John Grant Walsh; for over fifty years a resident of Auckland, occurred last week. Mr. Walsh, who was 70 years of age. came to Auckland from County Tyrone, Ireland, and was engaged l in the milling business, first at Mr. J. C Firth's mill and afterwards at the Northern Roller mills. • He took a keen interest in politics in the early days, being a firm advocate of tho single tax. Ho was one of the founders ofthc Auckland Society of the New Church, with which bo was connected until his death. He leaves one son and one daughter, PASTOR H. M. RIES. [by telegraph.—press association.] DANNEVIRKE, Wednesday. The death has occurred of Mr. 11. M. Ries, pastor of the Lutheran .Church, at tho age of 66 years. He was one of. the pioneer settlers of the district, arriving from Denmark in 1866. He was at one time Mayor of Dannevirke, and at different times served on various io cal bodies. He was a prominent Forester.
