AMERICAN BAND
PERFORMANCES IN ENGLAND. COMPETING WITH BRITISH. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 'n.in.t fiON'DON. March 31. The Minister of Labour, Sir Arthur Stop I Mai I land, has forbidden Paul Whiteman's famous American band to perform at the Ti vol i cinema theatre on the ground that it would displace 32 .British • bandsmen. The Wiiiteman band is to be allowed to plav at the Kitkat night club, where it is to receive £2200 a week, but the Minister agrees with the Musicians' Union in opposing American bands obtaining work in England to the detriment of British musicians.
