RAILWAY WORKSHOPS.
REORGANISATION SCHEME. CURTAILMENT OF STAFF. A number of tradesmen employed in railway workshops have recently received notice of dismissal, and the fact was brought to the notice of Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.F. The member for Manukau immediately despatched a telegram to the Jit. lion. J. G. Coates, Minister of Railways, stating that there was great concern among railway tradesmen on account of notice of dismissal being given to tradesmen at Hillside, Napier and Greymouth, and protesting that unemployment was increasing in Auckland owing to heavy immigration and dismissals from tho Public Service. The Prime Minister was requested to state whether there were likely to be dismissals of tradesmen in Auckland. Mr. Jordan received the following reply from Mr. Coates on Wednesday: "Replying to your telegram, owing to reconstruction and reorganisation of our workshops it, will be found necessary to curtail staff. Arrangements will bo made to reduce gradually, married men and e.\soldiers being given preference.—J. G. Goat os."
