TRAFFIC LAWS BROKEN.
PROSECUTION OF MOTORISTS. SPEEDING AND NEGLIGENCE. CONDUCTOR KNOCKED OFF TRAM A number of motorists wore lined in the Police Court yesterday for breaches of by-laws and traffic regulations. Mr. G. R. Hogan, chief traffic inspector, appeared for (lie City Council in cases heard before Mr. J. W. I'oynton, S.M., while cases heard before Mr. 1". K. Hunt, S.M., were conducted by Senior-Sergeant Edwards. It, was stated in refcrenco to Georgo Elliott, who was charged with dangerous driving, that ho travelled at 36 miles an hour along Manukau Road. A fine of £5 with costs was imposed. For similar offences, Harry Simpson, Cyril M. Walls and James Ashforth were fined £2 with costs each, and Ronald McDonald £1 with costs. Arising out of an accident in Broadway early on the morning of January 31, William James David Cameron, a bus driver, was charged with negligent driving. It was stated by a tram conductor that he was climbing from the back step of his tram t.o the, back buffer, in order to attend to the trolleypole, when a bus swept past and knocked him down. He was forced to stay away from work for a month. Defendant was fined £3 with costs. For travelling at excessive speeds, Edward Bell, Walter John Flashman and Allan McLaran were each fined £2 with costs, and Gordon Elley and Walter Tilby, £1 each with costs. " This is a very serious matter," said Mr. Hunt, when Albert Willows Reed was charged with refusing to give his name and address after an accident in Quay Street. "It is most important that motorists should give names and addresses, and there, must be no argument about it. You will be fined £2 with costs." Doughs B. Smith and Agnes V. Peters, who turned to the right at the intersection of Queen and Customs Streets between 4.30 p.m. and ft p.m., were each fined £2 with costs. Horace Dixon was fined £1 with costs. Failure to provide adequate lighting to vehicles cost John R. Herring and W. McArthur 10s with costs each. For leaving vehicles unattended, John William Kelt, Vincent William Sims, and John Williamson were each fined 10s with costs, while Eric William Piatt was ordered to pay costs. Clarence Henson was fined £1 with costs for failing to procure a van driver's license. Cutting a corner cost Richard Peters a similar amount. For failing to obey a traffic signal at a street intersection, Charles Hudson was fined £1 with costs, and Roderick Wm. Alfred Hatcher 10s with cn.its.
