PRISONERS SENTENCED.
THREE COUNTRY CASES. FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE. Three prisoners who had pleaded guilty at country Magistrates' Courts were brought before Mr. Justice Herdman for sentence in the Supremo Court yesterday. Mr. Hubble appeared for the Crown. John Frederick Skipper had been sent from Gisborne, for sentence on a charge of false pretences in connection with a motor-car. His Honor admitted him to probation for two years and allowed him three months hi which to pay £5 Is costs. Robert Stephenson Wake, an elderly man, had pleaded guilty at Kawakawa to a charge of indecent assault on a little girl.. His Honor said that, assuming prisoner admitted the circumstances which appeared in the depositions he had been guilty of a very serious crime, as to which probation was out of the question. The young girls of the community must be protected. Prisoner was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. William David Berger's offence, committed at •Taumarunui, was carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16. His Honor said, it was evident that prisoner was only technically to blame—that the girl, whom he had "now married, was to a great extent responsible for the unfortunate incident. He would therefore be ordered to eoino up for sentence whan called upon.
