SUPPLIES FOR SOUTH ISLAND.
TEST EXHIBITION SHIPMENT.

Arising out of several conferences that have been held between interested parties in Dunedin and other centres of the South Island regarding supplies of Island fruits to the South Island, an interesting experiment is being tried in the Government pavilion at the exhibition. A new bay is to be put to the practical use of exhibiting bananas, oranges, lemons and pears from Rarotonga. Special arrangements have been made for this consignment to reach Dunedin to-morrow morning and to be on sale. The shipments were landed by the Maunganm in W elling10The Department of External Affairs is of opinion that Cook Islands fruit is suitable for the South Island market and can be landed in large quantities regularly in a little over a week from the date ot shipment in the Cook Islands. *ai o the purpose of the experiment is to ascertain' the overhead cost of bringing the fruit South. It is not specially selected for the purpose, but is part of the oroinary shipment sent regularly to New Zealand by the San Francisco mail steamers.
