A COCKNEY POET.

It seems rather late in the day to honour the memory of the great songster of love, Robert Herrick; but a chancel windowdedicated to him has just been unveiled in the church at, Dean Prior, Devonshire. This is the little village, nestling under Dartmoor, which was for a long period the scene of Herriok's clerical activities. He was appointed rector in 1629, was ejected during the Commonwealth, and returned in 1662, to remain until his death in 1674. being buried in the village churchyard. Herrick was so long in Devonshire and wrote so extensively of cowslips, daffodils, etc., that it is sometimes overlooked that he was a bom Londoner. As a fact, the son of a goldsmith. he was a thorough Cockney, never being quite reconciled to a rural life.
