ALLEGED BENZINE THEFT.
SMITH AND MOYNE IN COURT.
REMAND TO ROTORUA GRANTED.
The prisoner, Thomas Smith, who escaped from the Rotorua express on February 23, and James Moyne, were charged in the Police Court yesterday with stealing six gallons of benzine valued at 31s 6d at Onekeneke, Tapuo, on February 8. Both men were handcuffed. On the application of Chief-Detective Cummings, the accused were remanded to appear at Rotorua next Tuesday. Smith was further charged with wilfully damaging a railway carriage window, valued at 15s, on February 23. Mr. Sullivan, for accused, asked that the charge should stand over until after the next Supreme Court sessions. The magistrate, Mr. Poynton, agreed to this course, and the charge was adjourned until May 11.
