EXHIBITION FARE.
DUNEDIN NOT WASTEFUL.
LITTLE DEMAND FOR LUXURIES.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUNEDIN. Monday
When the exhibition was finally planned Dunedin merchants stocked up their supplies of all sorts of expensive goods such as champagne, high-grade liqueurs, tostly condiments and so on, expecting that following the usual experience of exhibition times, articles ordinarily classed as luxuries would become necessities. That foretelling has been hopelessly falsified. One wholesaler who was questioned this morning said his sales of champagne and of other rSre lines had hardly increased at % all since the, exhibition opened in November. .The sales of wine have largely increased but it is the Australian: wine that is asked for,-; buyers seldom ordering the imported makes. Australia has fairly captured the New Zealand wine market.
Spirits and beer sales have been considerably augmented. Apparently Dun-; -adin people and visitors are entertaining themselves economically, probably with the idea of having more to spend on the exhibition,
The consumption of obvious necessities in the way of foodstuffs hau come, fully' up to expectations and supplies are forthcoming, care having been taken . many months ago to place large orders.' In these lines, however, economy is also observable. High-priced imported pickles for example are not much asked for. The average grades are what the people are eating. This' applies more or less to all ordinary food.
