QUARREL AFTER DANCE.
WOMAN STRUCK BY HUSBAND. TEN DAYS IN HOSPITAL. IMPRISONMENT AND SEPARATION. "Well, they are going to be separated for three weekss at any rate," said Mr. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday, during the hearing of an application bv Christina Elizabeth Basham (Mr. C Clarke) for a separation order against her husband, William Edgar Basham, aged 28 (Mr. Bryce Hart). The husband was also charged with assaulting his wife on February 13, causing actual bodily harm, the charge being later amended to common assault. Christina Basham said she went to a dance on the evening of February 12, and her husband called at the hall for her. When they arrived home about midnight they commenced to quarrel, and she did not go to bed. They continued quarrelling until about noon next day. She was then taken to the hospital suffering from a cut on the head, and was in the institution for ten days. Cross-examined by Mr. Hart witness said she had been to only three dances and each time received her husband's permission. Mr. Hart said the domestic relations of the couple had been most unhappy. There was no doubt they ought to be separated. The husband had been severely provoked and had lost his temper. The Magistrate: Nothing justifies a man in knocking his wife about. Mr. Hart said the children had been committed to a home last week. The husband iiad already been in gaol for a week. The Magistrate: Yes, I was going to give him a month, but I am making it only three weeks. Accused was sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment, and the application for a separation order was granted. The question of maintenance was postponed for a month.
