Read the following extract from the N.Z. Herald of August 25, 1925:—"VIEW FROM THE RANGES.—OFFICERS EXPRESS DELIGHT. Several United States naval officers were taken on a motor trip to the ranges in the early part of last week and were so delighted with the views and the native bush that they returned with a number of, brother officers during the week-end. They visited Exhibition Drive -at the , west end of the Titirangi Hills . and from one of the ridges they'were able to view the whole of the Ma-nukau. Harbour on the one side and the city and suburbs, Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf on the other. The ,Coromandel Ranges,' the islands of the gulf, the distant country near Waihi and the wide landscape toward Whangarei, together with 511 any well-known landmarks, were visible and the visitors declared this panorama 'the finest view in the world.' When told they /were only about 12 mileu from the city they were amazed that the whole face of the ranges was not occupied by beautiful homes. One wanted to know 'why all the people who have money to make lovely homes missed -these picturesque places?' They were guided to some especially fine glades of tree ferns and nikau palms. "This will do me/ said one, "it is unique. The finest part of all your district. This is what visitors from other lands will love. Auckland will be a great city yet and it will attract- wealthy visitors from all parts of - the States. This is the place to take them; to see. They-will revel in these views and these palms and tree ferns will charm them, ,If we had. these near any United States city they would be worth a fortune.' "
