The golf professionals' championship tourney opened at Balmaeewan tins morning in perfect weather. Rain overnight had left the greens in perfect putting order. In the bogey handicap J. A. Shaw (Wellington) made a brilliant round of 69 for 18 holes, finishing 7 up. J. Forrest { Otago), returned the second best card, 5 up. J. Lambie (Heretaunga) was next, 4 up. Shaw's card read :—Out: 4, 4, 4. 3, 4, 4, 3 ? 4 ; 4_34.' In: 4, 5, 4, 4, 3, 4, 4, 3, 4~~ 35, Total, 69.
The following were the best cards returned in the bogey handicap.—Shaw (owe 2), 7 up; J. Forrest (3), 5 up; J. Malbie (1), 4 up; J. R. Galloway (scr), 3 up; H. R. Blair (owe 2), 2 up; A. J. Milliner (4), 2 up. The first stroke handicap played in the afternoon when there was a strong wind blowing, was won by J. A. Clements, who played great golf and won in 73. His card read; —Out: 6, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 3, 3, 4 37. In: 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 5, 5, 3, 4-36. Total, 73. The best cards for the stroke handicap were:—J. A. Clements, gross 73, handicap scr, net 73; 11. R. Blair, 80, plus 1—81; F. G. Hood, 80, plus 1-81; J. R. Galloway, 81, scr—Bl. To-morrow morning the first round of the Otago professional championship (72 holes) will be played, concurrent with the first rounds of the second stroke handicap and the Myers Challenge Cup. The second rounds will Be played in the afternoon.
