" The catches were:—Mr. Sam. Ludbiook (Gisborne), two swordfish, 2illb. and 2661b., launch . Rosemary; Mr. . Mason Bayly (Orakawa), two swordfish, 2321b. and 2501b.» launch Jean; Mrs. Sparrow (England), swordfish, 2621b., -launch Phyllis; Mr. Branson (Napier), swordfish, . 2261b., launch Ozone; Mr.; ; Milne (England), swordfish, , 2461b., launch : Ozone; Mr. Wright (England), y swordfish, 2241b., launch Doris; Mr. O'Nell (Auckland), swordfish, 1901b. i Colonel. and Mrs. Sparrow had a narrow escape in the launch Phyllis. They had a swordfish hooked and it had ;seen played for some timo. It made, straight for the launch. Colonel and Mrsf Sparrow quickly got out of the way and the boatman, realising what was happening, gave the enginei. a turn, The- swordfish , leaped right across- the counter of the launch, broke the line and got away. What is probably a record mako shark was caught , yesterday by Mr. C, H. Punford,' of Matangi, who, with Messrs. Faulkner Brothers and Mr. C. Cory\Vright, was fishing from the launch Elvida. THe mako fought for two-hours before being secured and was so largo that it could not be taken on board the launch. Fishing was abandoned and the monster . was towed into Whitianga. It proved to be 12ft. 3in. long with a girth of sft. Weighed this morning, 24 hours after being taken out of the water, it turned the scales at 8731b., although it had probably lost considerable weight since it, was caught. Mr.*C. A. Wells and Mr. J. Robertson, in the launch . Dart each caught a mako. One was also caught by Mr. B. J. Jacobs, of the launch Wakaroa, and one by the party in the launch Dolly D. The weights were, from 2521b/ downwards. Several launches' are out to-day, and the weather is perfect. Quite a number of fishing parties are . booked hero.
