ENGLISH TEST CAPTAIN.
CARR'S CHAN"C£SS FAVOURED. There is much speculation concerning England's captain in the coming test, matched, but the choice appears to have narrowed down to A. W. Carr, of Notts. Cecil Parkin has a high opinion of Mm as alio has J. B. Hobbs. The ambition of Carr U> lead England has loag been s.a open secret. He captained one of the trial teams before England's team against South Africa was chosiin, s.nd acquitted himself well. At that time there was some criticism when Gilligan was elected captain. > In the 1925 season Carr was easily the outstanding amateur batsman. His is thoroughly in earnest, and possesses the. same entbusialsm as GilKgan. 'To z use his own words, Carr " does not care a suck of his fingers for a seam swerVe bowler." Carr is enterprising with the bat, and especially suitable for tbnse-day tests', he is liable to knock any bowler off bis length. A fine fieldsman, lie has earned a big reputation as a captain in county cricket. Carr was bon in ISM , and his average in first-class cricket last season was 51.95. In 49 innings he compiled 2358 runs, his highest score b6ing 206.
