THE CIVIC SQUARE.
. Nine months ago, the ratepayers of Auckland rejected the City Council's proposals for the development of the Civic Square. That decision could not be final, since the existence of the area prepared for the scheme demands constructive action. From the day of the poll, it has been apparent that public opinion not only expected, but was prepared to give sympathetic consideration to, alternative proposals, and from the fact that the .term "Civic Square" has been popularly accepted as the appropriate description of the area, as well as from other evidence, it is apparent that the underlying principle of the original programme is not questioned. ■lt is time some indication was given by the City Council of its intentions. Several months ago, a committee was appointed to report to the council, but no further information has been given as to whether this committee has made any progress. This reticence is a mistake. It is not too late for the council to accept the suggestion of consultation with '3 committee of representative, citizens, a step that would probably enable it to reach a decision more promptly and would - certainly help to secure a favourable reception for the result. Whatever course it proposes to take, the council is under an obligation to give some account of its deliberations and an assurance that public impatience will not be indefinitely aggravated by the present condition of the Civic Square.
